interview with Lelin Alves | graffiti art & street stories  07/05/2014

Hello Lelin Alves! Thanks so much for taking the time to answer some questions for our readers. Please start by telling us a little about yourself, where are you located? Lugar is the place where I grew up and lived until today. I'm in Brazil now, São Paulo, Ribeirão Preto.

Q: How long are you into graffiti art?
A: I started in 1999.

Q: How would you describe your style?
A: This very difficult question... I'm still developing, but I think I'm known mostly for my characters in a perhaps new school style. I also really like letters, I even think to improve more on that style.

Q: Seems like your inspired by the comic books...
A: Yes. I saw many Marvel comics as a kid and I think this influenced my dash.

Q: Can you tell me about the making process?
A: I have a sketchbook. My drawings on paper are very basic, just a few scribbles, but I prefer working with spray. My ideas are first formed by the aesthetic aspect, sometimes the architecture inspires me, sometimes nature. I don't usually focus too much on the actual idea, It's a current inspiration.

Q: I love the fact that you use bright colors in most of your designs. Do you have any favorite color mix, or you simply follow your current inspiration?
A: Thanks... I don't like to limit myself with using only one color, although I like to create a cool feature, I usually look at my stock of paints, see those who left and choose a combination from that.

Q: To be a talented person must be a blast. Any other creative hobbies outside graffiti art?
A: Thanks... Working with commercial paintings, scenarios for theater and other things that appear involving spray paint and other inks. I'm in love with sprays. I'm not good with computer programs, each year has emerged better opportunities and gradually I'm leaving that to others. I hope one day to work only with my art more freely.

Q: Talking of a unique style... Have you ever thought to change something?
A: Yes, I'm changing but I do it little by little.

Q: Some of the interesting facts about you is your passion for skateboarding. How long are you into skateboarding?
A: I started skateboarding in 1998 and I began to paint on the streets. At the beginning we walked all over town looking for new places to skate and we took advantage to leave our marks with chalk sera, markers and paints where we passed. I drew since I was a child, since the graffiti was natural.

- How much does the adrenalin for extreme sports helps you to get inspired?
Today I take two different forms, graffiti has become almost a job. I have so much fun in painting, I like to do something new, not like others, and maintain the essence, but like it or love it, it makes you a little tired. I use skateboarding as vauvula exhaust, I don't want to be professional. I just have fun with my friends... I go home happy by hitting the same maneuvers.

Q: What keeps you creative?
A: I think traveling... every place that will bring something new.

Q: What advice would you give anyone looking to break into the field?
A: Listen more than talk, believe in your own style, often take your style as shameful, but with time it'll transform. The essence is also important, study the origins, because that's the reason why we're here.
